Well, I finally made it to the concert! WOW ! Even now as I write this, I'm listening to Vol. 1 of "Give Yourself to Love." I first learned of Kate Wolf on Austin City Limits, actually just before I came to California. Then heard her on I think KPFX, and that she was dead. I cried. a few years later, I heard her family and friends sort of gathered in the spring of the year to remember her. I wanted to be there too. And I made the festival this year!
The concert is absolutely the best. In particular, the venue is so very special. Even the Hawks overhead seemed to carry a message. The people in the audience were so warm and...... good. You could hardly feel alone. And most of all, Nina. WOW! -Mike 6/99

We attended Sunday...This is a beautiful place! Paul Kamm and Eleanore MacDonald were My wife's favorite (very romantic stuff). The Barbara Higby trio went from Turtle Island String Quartet to Vince Guaraldi...I Loved Them! Besides being a raconteur to rival Utah Phillips, Rosalie Sorrels is back, isn't she? Peter Rowan and the Rowan Brothers were subdued, but this is a memorial...I did miss the Free Mexican Air Force, but what the hell. We had to leave after the Rowan Brothers because our shields wouldn't hold against the constant barrage of photon torpedoes. We're gettin' old, but this was fun! -GB 6/99

Another great year! With these kind of lineups why this festival doesn't sell out early every year is a mystery. All of the benefits of the "big" festivals without the headaches sometimes associated with camping! Must be a pretty amazing lineup when you can have Greg Brown and Ramblin Jack Elliot for "tweeners!" Also shows the relaxed "don't take yourself too seriously" attitude when performers are willing to step in and clearly help out at the last minute. Many thanks to all of the organizers. -Scott 6/99

I had never been before. It was excellent, and I'm sorry to have missed the previous ones. Don't expect I'll miss any future ones, though. :) -Rick 6/99

I have lived in Sebastopol for the past five years and have always been intrigued by the Kate Wolf concert. I did not know your mother's music when the festival first started running a few years back, but always noticed a number of performers that I liked on the bill. This past year I bought the retrospective album that Nina Gerber produced and became familiar with your mom's music that way. When the festival rolled around this year, I decided I wasn't going to miss it. WOW! It was so amazing. Both days were perfect and every act was great. The venue was small, friendly, scenic, mellow and ten minutes from my house!! My wife and I can hardly wait for next year. Thanks for making it happen!! -Peter 6/99

Iris was wonderful. Sunday was so much more crowded than Saturday and I kept hearing that people were there specifically to see Iris DeMent.
Words can't express what a beautiful event this is, unless maybe in the words of an artist like Kate Wolf. I think all of the performers did at least one song by Kate.
Iris is such a gifted musician and singer. I'd never seen her live before or even heard any of her songs. And she did "Across the Great Divide". Robbie Osman from KPFA was in the back watching her intently during the performance of this song. I'm sure Iris was aware of the situation at KPFA. It felt to me like Iris was dedicating the song to Robbie, though I can't remember that she said anything. Maybe I just got this impression because KPFA was a hot topic on a hot day - 2 hot days. -Katrinka 6/99

Just heard Iris at the Kate Wolf Festival yesterday (June 27) in a vineyard surrounded by a redwood forest. It was hot in every way. The sun was hot and high and one of her first lines was "I wonder how many of us are getting cancer today.."
It's the first time I've seen her. What a voice! What understated sardonic humor... Peter Rowan (who is probably at least twice her size or more) came on stage to accompany her. She called him "her band" and made him stand up to play his guitar. She was terrific and left the audience clamoring for more. She's due to play at the Palms in Davis,CA on July 26.  -Leslie 6/99

I just wanted to compliment you on the terrific line-up for this years festival. Thank you especially- for bringing Lucy Kaplansky to our neck of the woods this year. She somehow captures both the individuality and the commonality of women all in the same breathtaking performance. -Stacy 2/99
